Hard Hitting Heaton

Swinton’s Big Win Over Collegiate

Swinton brought off one of the best batting performances in the club’s history on Saturday. In slightly over two hours they rubbed off a score of 215 hit up by Collegiate and won by nine wickets.

Charlie Heaton, who is having one of the best seasons if not the best of his career, completed 1,000 runs for the season for Swinton, and carried his bat for a brilliant century. Collegiate found themselves on a run-getting wicket and gave a fairly even hutting display, though the foundation of their big score was hit by one man, Buck. who was sixth out for a well-played 67. The Swinton bowlers pegged away industriously. and Hart, again, was the most successful, though his wickets were rather more expensive than usual. He took 4 for 67 in 14 overs. Cutts’s two cost 41, and Pearson’s two 48.

The real “bright” cricket came when Swinton batted.  Heaton and Denton put up one of their best first-wicket partnerships, with Heaton setting the pace. He was thoroughly at home with Collegiate’s moderate attack. He took three fours off an over by Branson, later went one better and scored four boundaries off an over by Buck, and, when Swinton needed 10 to win with about ten minutes to go, he hit two fours off an over, and a couple of byes made up the required runs. Of Heaton’s 124. 94 were got in boundary shots. Denton hit 9 fours. Swinton’s for one wicket is, we believe, a club and ground record.
