Golden Wedding – Mr & Mrs Bingley

November 1937

Mexborough & Swinton Times November 26, 1937

Mr. and Mrs. James Bingley, of 18, Brameld Road, Swinton celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary which occurs tomorrow (Sat.) with a party in the schoolroom of the Swinton Bridge Methodist Church yesterday.

They were married at St. Stephen’s Parish Church, Eastwood, Rotherham, on November 17th, 1887, and Mrs. Bingley is now 75 and Mr. Bingley 78 years of age. Mrs. Bingley is a native of Masboro, but her husband was born at Kilnhurst on the same day the Kilnhurst Parish Church was opened. As a boy he worked at Wilson’s Forge, Kilnhurst and then went to Kilnhurst Colliery where he worked for 58 years before retiring from his position as Enginewright about 7 years ago.

He was well known as a local cricketer and he captained Kilnhurst Cricket Club for many years.

They lived at Kilnhurst for 46 years and came to their present home in Swinton when the Council estate was built 4 years ago.

Both are in good health and by no means look their age. Mr. Bingley now occupies himself in a useful way by making small gadgets and articles of furniture for the house. His favorite craft is the making of wooden kerbs. Mrs. Bingley was busy putting the finishing touches to a special two tier cake for the anniversary party when our representative called.

There is one other achievement of which they are particularly proud: they have taken the “South Yorkshire Times” every week since their marriage fifty years ago.

They have two daughters, both of whom are married. One is Mrs. G. A. Thompson (Mexborough) who also has one daughter and the other is Mrs. Percy Smith, of Wath, who has a three year old son.
