Goal Scoring Record

Rotherham United Leader’s Success

It is not so much the player himself, as good management and team spirit of a club which makes good footballers, said Walter Ardron, Rotherham United’s centre forward, who lives at 90, William Street, Swinton, when he was interviewed following his goal-scoring successes this season

This season Ardron has scored 34 goals in 38 games, including five “hat-tricks” and four goals in a single match.  This beats the previous Rotherham record of “Billy” Hicks who some years ago got over 30 goals in one season. Mr. J. McGuire of South Elmsall, a Rotherham United scout seven years ago gave Ardron his first chance in the reserves against Frickely Colliery.

He played his first team match at the age of 11 for Swinton Bridge Board School.  At 14 he left school to work down the pit.  He has worked seven years as a fireman on the L.N.E.R. and while as professional footballer thinks that with a wife and an 8-months’ old son it is better to have a regular job in addition to footballing.
