Twenty-one-year-old Jack Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Smith, of 31a, Bridge Street, Swinton, on Sunday at a York dance band contest, appearing as a member of Jack Sheldon’s band, won the individual clarinet and saxophone contests.

The adjudicator. Mr. Steve Race, said he regretted that there was no award for the best musician in the contest. Had there been one, he and his fellow judge, Mr. Ray Ellington, would have had no hesitation in presenting that prize to Jack. He said it was a pleasure to hear a musician who was so obviously at home with both instruments.
