Price And Probert Show

Enterprise

Adverse weather conditions marred the match at Swinton on Saturday when Hickleton were the visitors.

Though it ended in a draw the match provided several thrills, one being the early dismissal of Heaton by the second ball of the first over. He was bowled when trying to turn Cyril Probert to leg. Swinton had several team changes, J. Noble and D. Meggitt, two promising young players. being brought in from the second eleven. Heaton and Denton opened for Swinton in rather threatening weather, the light being very poor After Heaton had been dismissed by C. Probert for two, Denton and Adey made a good stand which realised 70. After about 40 minutes play was stopped by a heavy downpour of rain with the total at 48. Play was resumed after threequarters of an hour and Swinton took their total to 60 in the next ten minutes. When nine more runs had been added Adey played on. Shortly afterwards Hart came near to being run out but Kinder returned the ball wide. C. Probert bowled Hart at 89. He was succeeded by Price who opened with a four off R. Probert. In the next over Denton fell to C. Probert.

He had made 39, the top score for Swinton. R. Probert took his first wicket when S. Cutts was caught by Senior behind the stumps. Off the next four balls Price added 16 runs, hitting four consecutive boundaries. Price increased his own score to 27 with another four, bringing the total to 117. With only another run added Willoughby was clean bowled by C. Probert and soon after Price was missed by Silverwood. Price was eventually caught by Turner off Riley. Of Price’s 35 runs, 20 were from boundaries. Good displays were given by Machin and Meggitt who scored 34 and 15 not out respectively. Meggitt promises to become a, clever bat and played the Hickleton bowling confidently.

Turner and Senior opened for Hickleton, Senior remaining until stumps were drawn. The partnership was broken when Turner was given I.b.w. for 9. Hickleton scored more quickly than Swinton and had 84 runs on the board. in 75 minutes. Heaton made a smart catch to dismiss Fawden, who contributed 26. C. Probert’s 22 included five fours. Hickleton were the more convincing batting side and with a little more time would most probably have taken full points. The best bowling averages for Swinton were by R. Denton and B. Meggitt, each with 1 for 14, and T. Hart 1 for 19. For Hickleton, C. Probert had 5 for 64 and R. Probert 2 for 53.
