Former Swinton Man
Back Home From Hong Kong
Mr D. Bower of 106. Ellis St Brinsworth, has recently return to this country after spending two and a half years in Hong Kong, serving in the army.
A former Swinton, and son of the late Mr. Bower and Mrs. Liversidge of Bower Road. Swinton, he is married and works in Brinsworth.
Mr. Bower told a “South ‘Yorkshire Times” reporter this week that Hong Kong was a wonderful place “where you can spend a good holiday.” He said everything was much cheaper there and the Chinese people were very good.
When he first went to Hong Kong, to Kowloon, they were confronted with streets blocked by stones, and overturned cars, and English people burned to death. Fortunately this trouble was under control within days, but many times they were called out to riots,
The weather was beautiful, but, Mr. Bower said: “When it rains there is no stopping it. It rains harder than I have ever seen before.”
Mr. Bower has now been demobilised from the Army and has returned home to his wife and their one child.
