Burglary at Swinton
Hawker Charged
Vincent Pollard (19), a hawker, of no fixed abode, was committed to trial at the next Quarter Sessions, at Rotherham West Riding Police Court last Friday when he appeared on remand on a charge of having broken into and entered a dwellinghouse occupied by Mr. Charles Waring Verity, steel founder of 145, White Lea Road, Swinton, on May 8th, and stolen a quantity of jewellery, clothing and money, value £200. Pollard was further charged with having done malicious damage to a mahogany dressing table to the extent of £25.
Pollard, who pleaded “guilty” was stated to have an alias as Sonny Fisher, at the previous hearing.
Mr. Verity said on Saturday, May 7th, he left home about 2 p.m. to go to Thrybergh Golf Club. He left the downstairs windows and doors secure. When he returned about 5.15 p.m., he found the kitchen window broken and the back door open.
A back bedroom window was also wide open. Entering the house he heard someone moving about upstairs, and shortly after the back gate banged. He went to the back gate and found a pair of boots on the ground. He saw the prisoner running across the railway line, and chased him, but lost sight of him.
At the end of White Lea Road witness saw P.c. Hunter and made a communication to him. Later he saw Hunter with the prisoner and identified him.
Witness returned to the house and found practically all the drawers open and the contents strewn about in disorder. Some jewellery was missing from an attaché case, including three Masonic jewels.
Upstairs the drawers were open and the contents in disorder, and from one was missing a gold wristlet watch.
