Fire at Ward & Sons

May 1970

South Yorkshire Times, May 2nd 1970

Firemen wearing breathing apparatus fought a blaze which destroyed old records and badly damaged a lorry in a warehouse at the Swinton works of Ward and Sons early yesterday (Thursday) morning.

Six appliances from Mexborough, Brampton and Goldthorpe were called after the fire was spotted by a nightwatchman shortly after 3 a.m. It took nearly an hour and a half to bring the fire under control and old files, wrapping paper and bottles, which were stored in the warehouse were completely destroyed. The cab of a lorry, which was parked in the warehouse, was gutted. Fireman, who had to contend with dense smoke, wore breathing apparatus and damping down operations were continued throughout yesterday morning.

A Fire Brigade spokesman at Mexborough said later that it was thought the fire had started among the old files
