Swinton Turnip And Potato Thefts

A batch of Swinton children were summoned at Rotherham West Riding Children’s Police Court on Monday for stealing growing turnips and growing potatoes, the property of James Sharpley, from a field at Kilnhurst, on varying dates.

Altogether eight children were summoned land the fines in each case were 5s. each.

James Sharpley told the magistrates that he was bound to bring an occasional case to court or he would have neither potatoes nor turnips left in the fields.
