More Thrills At Swinton

Yet again we had a fighting finish at Swinton, when Brampton were the visitors on Monday. The match produced 260 odd runs, and the issue was doubtful almost to the last over Brampton, to second knock, made desperate efforts in the gathering gloom, following a late start, and put up a splendid fight.

The individual triumph of the match was that of Charlie Heaton who, though his is the temperament of the ”correct” cricketer, continues to amas runs in the evening league game. He passed the half century for the third consecutive innings in this competition, and made his aggregate for Swinton’s four matches to date into 193 for twice out.

He looked like carrying his bat also, for the third consecutive time, but gave Hickling a catch behind the wicket when there was still a little under a quarter of an hour to go. The score up to then had not moved too swiftly, except for an aggressive contribution by Adey, but Price hit at everything in the last few minutes.

Full credit is due to the Brampton attack for the way they kept the batsmen in check during the first fifty minutes or so. Had their fielding been as keen and accurate, the finish would probably have been even closer. Brampton opened with rare confidence, and Davis looked good for a “run-a-minute” innings till he hit across a straight one from Sam Cutts. Albert Smith showed an unwonted aggression, but Hart, and later Hibbert, kept too good a length and kept up too keen a pace off the pitch, for he and Dodds to get sufficiently far in front of the clock. Dodds made a valiant effort, and got his runs at the run-a-minute rate, but the later batsmen found “going for runs ” a hopeless business against bowlers who had a habit of hitting the wicket when a shot “misfired.”

Still, it was a gallant and stirring finish, and Brampton took at least some of the honour, for the show they put up with a depleted team. Hart bowled with a fine fire throughout the innings, and it was his work that really settled the issue. Hibbert sent up some good stuff for a few overs. His work in the field, too, was good. Brough, called up from the second team, kept wicket very well for Swinton, whose field work. generally, was almost up to their best standard.
