Bride and Bridegroom After The Ceremony

When on Tuesday the marriage was solemnised at Swinton Parish church of Miss Clarice Elliott, daughter of Mr. Walter Elliott of 38, Church Street, Swinton and the late Mrs. Elliott, and the Rev. Reginald William Lee Bedford, vicar of St. Hilda’s Church, Shiregreen, Sheffield, a former curate of Swinton parish, a very large congregation filled the church.

Five clergymen took part in the service, at which the choir and altar servers were present.  During the service Nuptial Mass was taken, the celebrant being the vicar, the Rev. H. W. Quarrell, assisted by the Rev. A. R Hince and the Rev. F. Smedley. A former vicar of Swinton, the Rev. T. G. Rogers (Rector of Tankersley) officiated at the marriage ceremony. The choir sang the 128th psalm and the hymns sung included “Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost,” “Holy Spirit, Lord of Grace,” “O, Perfect Love,” and “The King of Love My Shepherd Is.”  Mr. Mawson was organist. The bride was given away by her father.  Her gown was of white Honiton lace over a satin underskirt and formed a train.  Her veil fell from a head-dress of orange blossom and she carried camellias and orchids.  She was attended by Misses Emily Roebuck and Ethel Schofield, who wore blue net and pink taffeta, respectively, and Misses Kitty Turton and Edna Richardson in green net and mauve satin respectively.  Each had head-dress and muff to match.  The Rev. R. R. Gaskill (assistant priest at Wath) was best man.  Mr. E. Underwood (Oxford) was groomsman and Mr. A. Jones usher.  A reception was held in the Church Hall, Swinton.  The honeymoon is being spent in the Lake District.

A prominent worker at Swinton Parish Church, the bride is District Commissioner of Girl Guides. She was trained at Bangor College and was on the staff of Swinton Fitzwilliam School.  Mr. Bedford studied at Lincoln Theological College and held a curacy at Swinton for about five years from 1928 then becoming priest-in-charge at St. John’s Church, New Edlington until appointed to Shiregreen in November 1940.
