“Desert Rat” Home

Dvr. D. C. Elliott, 6, Crossland Street, Swinton, has arrived home after serving in the Army for 4½ years, most of the time abroad.  Dvr. Elliott volunteered in November 1939 and, after being stationed in Scotland, for five months, left for Norway.

Returning from Norway, he embarked for Egypt and joined Wavell’s Desert “Rats” serving in Libya and Cyrenaica.  Early in 1941 he went to Greece and was in one of the last convoys to leave.  After spending a few weeks in Egypt, he was moved to Syria and later on to Iraq.  While in Iraq he was engaged in conveying supplies to Russia.

After working on this job for 12 months he left again for Egypt for the third time, and remained there until the Allied invasion of Italy, when he was transferred to the 8th Army, serving with them until he returned home on leave.

In all, Dvr. Elliott has travelled through 11 countries.
