Denton’s Day Out

But Branson Stops Century Bid

Raymond Denton (picture) had a field day against Collegiate at Swinton on Saturday, though he did fall three short of the century. Before he reached double figures, he offered Goldie a hard chance and it would have been a very good catch had the fieldsman taken it—but at sixteen he mishit a ball and skied the easiest of chances. B. W. Doncaster, fielding slip, dropped it! After that, naturally, the only course open to Denton was to show his appreciation in the usual way. He did, and another century to add to his long and honourable record in the game seemed but a matter of time, when Branson took over and bowled him with his first ball.  Heaton and Denton gave their side an excellent start, but as often happens, a break for rain was quickly by a separation. On resuming Heaton was run out as the result of a smart return by Goldie from mid-off. The two showed more caution than enterprise at the outset, but once the partnership had passed the 50 mark, runs came much more freely. Price rattled up a rapid 32, including a six, and was able to declare with reasonable time to force a decision. But with L. C. Barber’s wicket captured as a contribution towards it, and Collegiate still 147 behind, rain so frequent and unwelcome a visitor at meetings between these two teams put an end to it.
