Cinema for Swinton.
Local Film to Build and Own It.
A cinema theatre for Swinton is on its way. Thomas Wade and Sons of, Wath on Dearne commenced work this week on the site opposite the “Queen’s” Club, and are building a theatre to seat just over 900 persons. This site was acquired from Mt. Hammerton some years ago, but the attempt to form a company failed. Later another attempt was made, again without success. Now Messrs. Wade have acquired the land. and it is their Intention to carry through, the project without outside assistance.
Wade and Sons made their first venture in the cinema business with the Wath Majestic, in which they have still considerable holdings. They also built the new cinema at Cudworth; but this at Swinton will be the first they own entirely.
It is to be a handsome and up-to-date place, with a facade either of local stone or terra-cotta. All the seating will be on the ground floor, with the rear portion raised and enclosed. Building is expected to take seven or eight months. The frontage is 54 ft. and the building will be 100ft deep. No provision for stage performances is made: the building is designed solely for films.
