Church Garden Party
Realises Nearly £100 at Swinton
Nearly £100 was raised for church funds when Swinton Parish Church held a garden party on Saturday in the Vicarage grounds.
Miss Barbara Manley, Sunday School Queen, opened the garden party, wearing her Queen’s regalia, and accompanied on the platform by the Chairman of Swinton U.D.C., Coun. W. Bentham, his wife, and Mrs. H. W. Quarrel’, wife of the Vicar of Swinton.
Attractions included pony rides for children, rifle range, punch board, hoop-la, rolling the penny, cake stalls and scores of others.
The baby show drew many entries and winner, chosen by Nurse Baxter (Montagu Hospital), was lovely Kevin Walter Hankin (picture), nine-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Hankin, of 8, Princess Road, Mexborough. Other winners In this competition were Rosemary and Veronica Morton (twins), of 55, Valley Road, Swinton, John Harry Herbert, Frank Clayton, Ruby Parker. Stuart Waterson and Julie Reader. Each of the babies received a prize. This
A fancy dress competition was popular, and an ankle competition was judged by Churchwardens. The winner was Mrs. Painter and runner-up Mrs. Lawrence. Mr. A. Smith, a church member, won the hat trimming competition, his entry being quite the latest creation in fashion. In the pets’ competition there were few entries. Winner was Wendy Gilliver who entered her pet cat and second was Miss R. Kershaw, whose pet was a Corgi dog.
Tea was served out of doors despite the threatening weather. A beetle drive in the evening brought activities to a close.
