Child’s Fatal Fall              

A verdict of “Accidental Death” was returned at the inquest held at Swinton, on Saturday into the circumstances of the death of Joseph Miller (2), son of William Mellor, of 16 Queen St.

Deceased’s grandmother stated that the child had been put on the table in the kitchen, and when the mother began to clear away, she put the child on the floor.

As soon as her back was turned the child climbed up on to the table by means of a chair. The mother in placing the child on the floor again scolding him, but immediately she turned her back to pick up some pots, the child climbed once again on to the table, and before the mother could do anything, he had overbalanced and fallen to the floor, where witness thought he struck his head on the sideboard.

Deceased’s father in his evidence said the child, was a very roguish child, and always getting into mischief.
