Chairman of the Guardians
Mr Alfred Abraham Nicklin, of 70, Charles Street, Swinton, was appointed chairman of the Rotherham Board of Guardians this week, is a native of Featherstone, coming to Swinton 34 years ago.
He began to work at the South Kirkby colliery when 12 years of age, and afterwards at Treeton colliery and Kilnhurst colliery.
Whilst at Kilnhurst he was elected to the committee of the local branch of the YMA and was involved in the dispute at Kilnhurst, which lasted for two years – 1904 to 1906.
Mr Nicklin went to Manvers Main and was elected to represent the number two branch on the Executive Committee of the Y.M.A. which he did until 1910.
He was elected to the Rotherham Board of Guardians in 1910, and is now the senior member of that authority. He has held the chairmanship of every committee and was vice chairman of the Board last year.
In 1970 Mr Nicklin was appointed president of the Manvers Main number two branch of the Y.M.A. which position he still holds.
He was a founder of the Swinton Working Men’s Club and chairman for seven years; has been a member of the Board of Management of the Montagu Hospital since its formation, and is a trustee of the Swinton Athletic Ground on behalf of the Manvers Made workers.
