Carolin Dances To Scholarship
A 15-years-old Swinton girl has won this year’s scholarship to the Royal Ballet School in London. Carolin Jones, of “Macardo”, 83, Thomas Street, Swinton, a pupil at Swinton Comprehensive School, has been chosen from girls throughout the country for the one “open” place at the Royal School.
She is a pupil of the Miss Thompson School of Dancing, Clifton Bank, Rotherham, which achieved the unique distinction of having three girls out of the finalists.
Carolin wins the scholarship after only three and half years of training which means that up to this week, she had been regarded as a relative novice. Ironically Miss Minnie Thompson head of the school, only entered her for the scholarship “to gain experience”.
However Carolin has worked very hard for the award – she travels to Rotherham six times a week for tuition. She went to London last weekend with two of her school friends, Nora Lowe and Sally Cooper, and after performing test piece exercises and movements all three were asked to return on Tuesday for a final analysis.
Carolin was eventually awarded the scholarship and she will start at the Royal School in September. The course lasts two years but each student has to apply for re-entry after the first year. Students who successfully complete the course are found places in a ballet company.
Carolin, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jones, has appeared regularly on A.T.V.’s “Junior Showtime” with other members of the Thompson school. She has also been a guest on “Diane’s Theatre.”
