Canal By-Laws Offences at Mexborough
For a breach of the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Company’s by-laws by navigating a vessel out of a lock before the gates had been opened to their full extent, Albert Edward Waddington, a Mexborough bargeman, was ordered at Doncaster on Tuesday to pay towards the costs of the case.
Mr. W. A. Lambert prosecuted, and said that it would appear to be a trivial case, but it was brought in order to enforce the bylaws. On February 27th defendant took a barge into a lock at Mexborough and, instead of opening the exit gates by hand, he went to the horses head, and the horse pulled the barge right through, opening the gates with the barge. Damage amounting 15s. was done to the gates.
Mr. Lambert also mentioned cases heard a month again against Beevers, Ltd. Swinton road, Mexborough, for obstructing the canal with barges at Mexborough. The cases had been adjourned for a month and Beeves, Ltd. ordered to remove obstructions. They had now one barge broken up and the other had been sold and moved.
Mews. Beevers were ordered to pay £5 5s. costs.
