Breach of Sugar Order

Albert Hammerton (50), confectioner, Swinton, was yesterday, at the Rotherham West Riding Court, fined 20s. for a breach of the Sugar (Confectioner ) Order, 1917, on December 7.

Superintendent Haynes stated that he paid 9d for quarter of a pound of jelly cuttings. The maximum price for chocolates was 3d. and other sweets 2d. per oz.

Defendant pleaded that the jelly cuttings were not sweets, but were used like jelly cubes for making jelly. If he had transgressed, it was through lack of knowledge
