Wath to Rescue In Water Crisis
20,000 Gallons a Day
Local Firm’s Public Spirited Gesture
Swinton residents, many of whom have been without water for 36 hours and some for 48 hours, will be pleased to hear that immediate steps have been taken by Swinton Urban Council Water Committee to alleviate the position.
At an emergency meeting of the committee last night it was reported that Wath Urban Council are to assist and pass on 20,000 gallons of water per day, and that Messrs. Ward and Sons, Swinton mineral water works have cut off a machine and are contributing 10,000 gallons a day from their own private borehole.
The Chairman, Coun, A. Newsam (picture) , also reported a slight improvement in the incoming supplies from Sheffield and Rawmarsh.
” Must Be Careful “
Coun. Newsam said there was no guarantee that this help would continue, ” It depends on the supply these people will ultimately want themselves,” he said. “The people of Swinton must be very careful with the water they get.”
The Ministry or Health have sanctioned a loan of £1,030 for the provision of 800 yards of steel water piping to bring water into Swinton from Wath, and Coun Newsam announced that they had been told that the necessary piping would be in the hands of Dearne Valley Water Board to-dav (Friday). ” This is a bit of sharp. work on behalf of the Ministry,” he said.
In view of the labour position, Swinton are to inform the Dearne Valley Water Board that they will send men down to assist if it is necessary in order to speed up the work in connecting the Water Board’s supply to Wath, who in turn will supply Swinton.
Although the Council are in recess for the summer vacation, Coun. Newsam asked his colleagues to be in readiness for further meetings if the position altered in any way.
The Committee, which consists of all the members of the Coun agreed.
