Swinton Air Mechanic with Exploring Expedition

Mr Harold David Jones (28). son of Mrs B. Jones, of 17, Toll Bar Road, Swinton, is a member of a British expedition which is at present exploring the Antarctic from a camp at Marguerite Bay in Grahamland.

Supplies By Air

An aircraft stationed at Marguerite Bay is used for dropping supplies to sledge parties, and Mr Jones is mechanic.  He has been loaned by the R.A.F. to the Colonial Office to the two and a half years to take part in the expedition.

Educated at Mexborough Grammar School, Mr Jones joined the R.A.F. at 16, and attained the rank of Flight Engineer.

During the war his aircraft was shot down and Mr Jones was a prisoner in Germany where he remained for three years.

Mr Jones played Rugby in the RAF team. He has one sister, and a brother employed at Manvers Main Colliery.
