Mexborough And District Sunday School Union.
The annual Whitsuntide festival in connection with the above union took place on Monday. The Mexborough and Swinton School children first met in the Swinton Market-place, where they sang the hymns specially arranged for the occasion.
The whole of the Mexborough, Swinton, and Denaby Schools subsequently were arranged on a spacious gallery erected in front of the Montagu Arms, Mexborough, where they sang in excellent style the hymns arranged for the festival, under the conductorship of Mr. W. P. Holms. Upwards of 2,000 children took part in the festival, in the presence of several thousands of spectators.
Kilnhurst
The annual gathering of the various Sunday schools of this village was held yesterday.
A procession was formed in the centre of the village, headed by the Kilnhurst Alliance Brass Band, and proceeded to Piccadilly, returning through the village to the Weir Bridge, and thence to the Recreation Ground. A public meeting was held on the ground. Mr. W. Heward presided. Addresses were delivered by several teachers.
The children sang at intervals the hymns of the Mexborough and District Sunday School Union, under the leadership of Mr. R. Maidan. The children were afterwards taken to their respective schoolrooms, where tea and plumcake were distributed, and on reassembling nuts and sweets were thrown amongst them, and balloons, &c., were sent up, to the great delight of the children.
