Rockingham Pottery Site Has New Owner
The famous Rockingham Pottery site at Swinton – last used about 1750 – has been purchased by Mr. T. Irving Pugh, proprietor of Kilnhurst Precast Stone and Concrete Co.
Mr. Pugh said yesterday that he had purchased the site from the Wentworth Estates Company. It includes the old cottage, cupola and approximately 12 acres of land
“I intend to preserve the old cupola, for it is something of an ancient monument.” he said. Any development of the land would take place on the Warren Vale Road side of the site Mr. Pugh said, but stressed there was no intention of industrial development.
Swinton Urban Council retain tenancy of the site, and their Finance Committee have considered steps which might be taken to preserve the precincts of the old pottery in perpetuity.
A recommendation from this committee that the Chairman of the Council (Coun. J Randerson), Clerk (Mr. A. Maclean) and Surveyor (Mr. H Goodwin) be authorised to take such action with the Wentworth Estates Company as may be deemed necessary to preserve the site was approved by the Council on Wednesday.
