Flight-Lieut. B. W. Culpin

Flight-Lieut, Bernard Walter Culpin, 21-year-old member of a “pathfinder” squadron of the R.A.F., and younger son of Mrs. Culpin, of 76, Rookery Road, Swinton, and the late Mr. George Culpin, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Flight-Lieut. Culpin has completed over a year’s operational duty as navigator of a heavy bomber, and has many sorties against important German targets to his credit.

He left his post as tax officer in the Inland Revenue Department at Rotherham nearly two and a half years ago to join the R.A.F. On completing nine months training in America, Flight-Lieut Culpin returned to this country 16 months ago with the rank of Sergeant, rising to Flight-Sargeant-before being commissioned Pilot Officer in July this year.

It was as Pilot Officer that he was awarded the D.F.C. The news of his latest promotion was contained in a letter to his mother. on Monday. Flight-Lieut.

Culpin’s father died when he was four. With his elder brother, L/Sgt. George Culpin (24), now serving in India, he attended Mexborough Secondary School.
