Swinton Housing.
Preparations For Piccadilly Scheme Completed.
The preparation for the first instalment of the Swinton Housing Scheme are completed and tenders for building are now been invited.
Part of the scheme aims at the erection of 14 working class dwellings on the site adjoining the council’s waterworks, at Piccadilly.
This site, which was purchased £100 originally for the waterworks extension scheme, comprising 4 acres, and was considered as suitable for building purposes as far back as 1914, but the scheme which was then formulated had to be scrapped in consequence of the war.
The present scheme was taken in hand in July this year, was carried forward as expediently as possible. The architect is major G.E.Knight of Rotherham.
The houses are to be built in nine blocks of four and two. One block of four and the two double house blocks front the Piccadilly Road. Two rows are to run off the main at right angles, on each side which will be erected two blocks of four houses.
The roads are to be 30 feet wide between the forecourts, with carriageway 30 feet wire, and grass verges 8’6” to be lined with trees.
There are to be no back approaches, but substantial grounds, both back and front available for gardens.
The two houses types one and two are shown below; both contain mineral, scullery, bathroom, WC, coal place and larder on the first lot was front entrance at the back and three bedrooms.
