Swinton Policeman’s Success

At the Stanley enclosure. Liverpool, on Saturday, the cream of police athletes of England, Scotland, and Wales, competed in the championships under the Police Athletic Association.
Championship honour came to Swinton and the Rotherham police Division through P.c. George Joseph Allonby, of Prince Street, c Swinton, who won the wrestling championship (Cumberland and Westmorland style, 11st,. 71b.), by defeating A Stanwix of Carlisle, in the final by two falls to one.
The first fall went to Stanwix who quickly threw the Swinton constable, but Allonby took the next fall almost as easily. The third was a’ “dog” fall, both contestants going to the ground, but, in the fourth and final fall, Allonby lifted his opponent (who was heavier), completely off his feet. In, the semi-final, Allenby was opposed to Hatch, of the London City Police, who was no match for the Swinton man who took the first two falls. Allonby was awarded a cup, gold medal and championship badge.
Constable Allonby, is a native of Penrith, near Carlisle, and was trained to wrestle by his fathet. as soon as he could walk. For many, 4 years, he was the undefeated champion of his district. During that time he worked for his father who is the owner of a farm.
In June 1925 he joined the West Riding Constabulary at Wakefield, or sent to Keighley and not sequence he was transferred to Swinton.
He is only 26 years of age, and is never competed previously in Northern Sports. He trained secretly for the Championships on Saturday, and his feet and made more remarkable by the fact that they joined the constabulary until Saturday, yet never wrestled. He was the lightest man there, being exactly 11 stones
The Rotherham Division was unsuccessful in the tug-of-war competition, as was also Sergeant Heseltine of Swinton, in the half mile cycling races
