Light Poll in Sole Ward Contest

Interest in the local elections at Swinton was sensibly diminished by the fact that contests were confined to one ward, Roman Terrace.

In all the other wards, Labour candidates had been given a walk-over: Mr. T. Beighton (Kilnhurst) and Mr. J. Jagger I (Bridge) were retiring members, and Mr. Gascoyne (Park) and Mr. W. Chappell (Central) were elected unopposed at the first attempt.

In the Roman Terrace ward the return of Mr. Kelly, the vice-chairman of the Council, a nominee of the Manvers Main miners, and a declared and vigorous opponent of the capital owning interest, was opposed by Mr. .Frederick Philips, a deputy employed at the Manvers Main Colliery. Mr. Kelly, however, swept the ward with ease. When the result was declared from the Council offices on Saturday night by the returning officer, Mr. B. Bower, there was only one ratepayer present to represent the public apart from those, immediately interested in the contest who attended the count. The figures were:

James Kelly (Lab.) …       436
Frederick Phillips (Ind.)  ..165

Majority 271.

Three years ago Mr. Kelly was elected by 418 to 161 votes polled by Mr. D. Edwards

There was at the same time a contest for the four seats on the Rotherham Board of Guardians allotted to the civil parish of Swinton, which includes Kilnhurst.

For these four seats there were four Labour candidates, one` man and three women. and all were successful. The only independent candidate. a woman, was placed at. the bottom of the poll.

Two retiring members, Mrs. Jagger and Mr. Abraham were returned first and second, and with them Mrs. Siddall and Mrs. Wignall; the unsuccessful candidate ‘being Mr*. Verity. Mrs. .Jagger and Mr: Nick Lynn from Swinton, Mrs Siddall from Roman Terrace and Mrs Wignall and Mrs Verity from Kilnhurst

Mrs. Siddall i is chairman of the Swinton education Sub-Committee and wife of Mr John Siddall, who represents Swinton on the West Riding County Council.

The figures were:

*Mrs. Jane Jagger (Lab.)         726
*Abraham Alfred Nlicklin. (Lab.) 661
