Mexborough and Swinton Times May 26, 1917
Sergeant A Goulding
(R.F.A.), Aged 26, of Wortley Ave, Swinton, is reported killed in action April 17.
Private W Wesley (York and Lancaster) was killed in September last, was his brother-in-law.
A letter has been received from his commanding officer by his parents. The letter is as follows:
βIt is with very rate great regret that I have to inform you of the death of your son, was killed in action last evening, 17 April.
He was a very capable non-commissioned officer and I thought very highly of him. I was very sorry indeed to lose him so suddenly.
He died as I am sure he would have preferred to β that is, fighting for his King and country; and I can assure you he suffered no pain whatever.
He was always very cheerful and immensely popular with the men. I also know from experience that he was one of the pluckiest fellows I have come in contact with, I can only offer you my sincere sympathy in your sad bereavement.
In conclusion let me say that if my time comes during this war, I wish for no better end than that of your son, namely, at the guns.β
Sgt Goulding, who was 26 years of age, was before enlistment, employed at a sawmill at Oldham.
