Private George Shenton

of 12 Thomas St, Swinton, is officially reported killed in action on the Somme on July 1.

He was, prior to the war, a workman at Manvers Main, and he leaves a widow and four children.

He enlisted in February 1915, and had been in France 11 months. He was 41 years old.

A memorial service was held at St Margaret’s, on Sunday last, the Rev C Steele preached a very appropriate sermon. The service was attended by relatives and friends of the deceased. Mr W Hughes attended as representative of the Manvers Branch of the YMA.
