Colleagues’ Tributes

A representative gathering of L.N.E. Railway employees of Mexboro’, Doncaster, and other centres assembled on Saturday at the Swinton Athletic Club to pay tributes to a colleague, Mr. Jack Ford, on his retirement.

Mr. Ford has been chief supervisor of the “running side” at the Mexboro’ Loco Depot since 1921, and although only 61 years of age is due for retirement under a new rule.

He came to Swinton as a youth in 1887 with his father, Mr. James Ford, a Scots sergeant of police. Commencing work on the G.C.R. at Mexboro’, he was transferred to Colwick in 1893, and made rapid progress.

Before he was 30 he was driving express passenger trains.

He has been a trustee of the Railwaymen’s Self Aid Fund for many years. Since the opening of the Welfar ground at Swinton he has been one of the most active officials. interested particularly in cricket and bowls
