Mexborough and Swinton Times August 2 1919
Swinton 61 Mexborough 73 for 4
The Swinton, and Mexboro’ match, the first of Swinton’s feast matches created quite a revival of old time enthusiasm. The crowd as the largest seen on the ground since Mexborough played there on the Saturday previous to the outbreak: of war in1914.
The gate receipts amounted to nearly £14.
Batting first Swinton made poor use of their opportunities. The wicket certainly helped the Mexborough’ bowlers, Hobson and Burkenshaw, but on the other hand the Swinton batting was feeble. C. Reader, A. Birks, and F. Pearce were the only men to offer any resistance, and the whole side were out for 61, a total far too small for Mexboro’s strong batting side.
There was a chance for Swinton, however, when Nicholson’s wicket fell, but Carter soon placed the issue beyond doubt by means of some vigorous hitting. He made one of the biggest hits ever seen on the Swinton ground. He hit a. fast ball from Pearce, out of the ground, and over the road, the ball landing in the field on the further side of the road. In about fifteen minutes Carter scored 40 runs being out to a magnificent catch taken by Harry Rigby. For Mexboro’, Hobson recovered his old form, his bowling was full of intricacy, and he was responsible for six wickets tor 26 runs.
