Railwaymen’s Splendid Presentations.

Tribute to The Late L/Cpl Jackson, V.C.

A number of interesting presentations were made during an interval at a whist drive and dance held under the auspices of the Mexboro’ No. 2 branch in the West street Hall on Tuesday. Mr. Creighton presided, supported by the Rev. T. Anderson

The parents of L/Cpl. L. N. Jackson, thee Swinton V.C., were presented with a wallet containing Treasury notes.

Jackson was awarded the V.C. for extreme gallantry in action in the assault on the Canal du Nord, near St. Quentin, in September of last year, when he rushed two machine-gun nests, capturing the guns and setting a noble example to the rest of his Company. Later in the-morning he was the first to jump into a German trench which his Platoon had to clear, and after further excellent work was unfortunately killed:

The Chairman expressed the pride they all felt in the gallant exploits of their late comrade. He displayed a noble recklessness and disregard of danger which had compelled their deepest admiration. He had had personal associations with him, the memories of which he was proud to cherish.

Jackson was exempt from military service, but in 1916 he felt he must leave his occupation, and the dictates of his proud, and noble character took him into the Army.
