Former Swinton Man’s New Post

Mr. Arthur William Baines, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Baines, who for many years lived in Crossland Street, Swinton, has recently been appointed the Musical Director at King’s College, Taunton, Somerset. He is not yet thirty years of age.

This is a splendid appointment and marks yet another step in his successful musical career, which is followed with great interest by all who knew his parents, and his aunt, Mrs. Harrison (formerly Mrs. Arthur Brown), of 58, Hartley Street, Mex-borough.

The late Mrs. Baines was formerly head teacher at Old Denaby School and later joined the staff of the Queen Street School, Swinton. Mr. A. W. Baines began his musical career at the age of nine, when he was a chorister at Lincoln Cathedral, and followed that by being selected as a boy chorister at the Countess Craven’s private chapel at Ashdown Park, Berks. He later obtained a. diploma for pianoforte playing at the Manchester College of Music.

To the general public in Swinton, Mr. Baines is perhaps better remembered as the first organist at the “Roxy” cinema. For some years he has been the assistant organist at Truro Cathedral. Cornwall. We learn this week from Mrs. Harrison, whose interest was very helpful to Mr. Baines during his early years, that he is to be married this summer.
