Swinton 271 for 6 dec  Scarborough 156

The first visit of Scarboro’ to the Swinton ground was favoured on Saturday with a perfect day; and marked by one of the best all-round performances put up by Swinton this season.

Granted that Scarboro’ were weakened by the absence of their captain, J. R. Allan, and of Waind, Fawcett and Howard, Swinton’s display was nevertheless most encouraging. The batting was more impressive than in any other match this season; and good bowling was backed up by keen fielding. Scarboro’ were beaten in the last ten minutes of the day after they appeared to have gone a long way towards forcing a draw.

The great item of the day’s play was the unfinished innings of 143 by Denton (picture). It was the first three-figure innings recorded by a Swinton player this season; and the highest for the club in Council cricket. Moreover, it was an effortless display unmarred by a single chance. Denton cut and ,drove with equal facility and, after a quiet period at the opening of his innings, never appeared the least troubled by the Scarboro’ attack. He completed his century in 90 minutes. He was at the wickets 2 ½ hours all, told.

Atter (33) engaged with him in an excellent partnership, and Price (31) later drove heftily—including a six bit that lifted the ball clean over on to I the football pitch.

Price’s declaration left Scarboro’ 2+ hours for battling.. For a time all went well with them. The batting of Barkham, Richardson and Barber put them in a sound position when only four wickets were down for 101. But then the bowlers got a dominating hold on the game and the last six wickets fell just ten minutes inside the allotted time for 52 more runs. Pearson took 5 wickets for 41, and Hart 4 for 35.
