Mexborough League cricket
Just a few words about Mexborough League cricket. Almost at the end, as we are, the position at the time of writing is more entertaining than any period throughout the season.
Hickleton, contrary to expectations, only drew with Mexborough last Saturday, and with Mitchell Main defeating Rawmarsh only a bare point now divides the two strong claimants for the championship. With a match each remaining for play, hopes and fears are very much in evidence in Hickleton and Mitchell Main cricket circles. Hickleton have yet to meet Hoyland Silkstone, whilst Mitchell’s wind up with a match with Monk Bretton. Such a close finish is sustaining interest right to the end.
With regard the individual hatting averages, Irving Washington, of Mitchell Main, still heads’ the list with an aggregate of 690 runs, and an average of 49.29. Alwyn Turner, of Hickleton, is second, with 658 runs, and an average of 47.00.
The Swinton C.C. have again signed on their clever professionals. F. Turner, and Brookes, for next season. Brookes, I am told, has taken over 80 wickets a cost of about half a dozen runs each, and this from a fast bowler in wet season.
