Councillor Bereaved

Swinton people learn with genuine grief of the death on Sunday the Mexborough Montagu hospital Bettine Esmee Wilkinson, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs F.J.Wilkinson, St Margaret’s Drive, Swinton.

Bettine was 16.

Mr Wilkinson has been a member of the Urban Council for nearly 10 years and was chairman last year.

He and his wife went for their summer holiday at Filey, and on the Tuesday, August 17, Betty was taken ill with septicaemia. She was brought home by ambulance and team to the Montagu hospital.

Although so young she had already given proof of my ability, and was widely loved for her gaiety and charm. It is a pitiful fact that on Saturday name was published in the list of those who have gained their School Certificates. She was an enthusiastic member of the Girl Guide movement was a capital Leader in a company. Earlier this year, when the Guys were made responsible for Mrs Ward albums hospital egg collection, she threw herself wholeheartedly into the work and collected more than 1000 eggs – the highest individual total.

At the Mexborough Secondary School she was extremely popular and played for the hockey second XI.
