A Swinton Producer

Swinton Players first season ended yesterday when, assisted by the South Elmsall Arts Fellowship Players, they gave their final miscellaneous entertainment.

Financial the season has resulted in a comparatively heavy loss on the small outlay, but that has been made up by enthusiastic members. Artistically, great progress has been made. The season will start with about 30 members, practically all of whom were new to dramatic work.

The big success was Mr Shaw’s “Candida,” but the Players have also had excellent practice and achieved encouraging success in short Shavian comedies such as “Overruled” and “How He Lied to Her Husband.”

The standard of acting, it is pleasing to record, as risen appreciatively since the first production, when a triple bill one act plays was given.

Mr D.L.Rowlands (picture), the Players producer formed his first association with drama at the Sheffield Educational Settlement after having played one or two parts in local society productions, and having produced a couple of short plays among Rover Scouts at Swinton.

Two years ago he formed a branch of the Sheffield Settlement, and conducted a small class in the study of dramatic Art. With members of that class he produced a series of short plays at the Little Theatre.
