Swinton Golden Wedding
On Sunday, Mr and Mrs Charles Philipson, of Holborn House, White Lee Road, Swinton, celebrate their golden wedding.
They were married at Hatfield, near Doncaster on May 13, 1867.
Mrs Philipson was a Miss Mary Hannah Booker, a member of a family well-known in Swinton.
The career of Mr Philipson is in many respects a remarkable one. He was brought up in the workhouse at Thorne, and left there at 14 to be apprenticed to a tailor named Cooper of Hadfield.
He served his indentures and remained with his employer another 13 years, making 20 in all.
In 1879 he took up an agency for the Prudential Assurance Company, and has been employed by that company ever since – 37 years. He came to Swinton in 1880, and is one of the oldest Prudential agents in the district.
During his residence in Swinton he has taken great interest in public affairs. He has acted as Overseer of the Poor for 21 years, and still holds that office. He has also been a member of the Old Age Pensions Committee for eight years.
He served a term of three years on the Swinton Urban District Council, has been a very valuable member of St Michael’s Church Swinton, in which he held office for a number of years.
Mr and Mrs Philipson have had five children, four of whom survive. During their stay in Swinton there one a wide measure of respect and esteem, and they expect to receive many congratulations on Sundays auspicious event.
