Guard Killed in Train Accident
Collision Near Wath Junction
Van hit From Behind
LMS Mainline Traffic Delayed
The guard of the goods train halted by a signal near Wath Road Junction at about 8.30 on Wednesday morning, was fatally injured when the van in which he was sitting was flung on top of empty coal wagons in front of it, by the engine of a parcels train which struck the rear of the goods train.
He was Norman Stanley Fawley, 16 Ellis St Brinsworth and his body was trapped in the shattered wreckage of his van and four empty coal trucks. Thick fog prevailed at the time.
Debris Widely Scattered
The parcels train had just rounded the bend from Swinton LMS station and passed under the Queen Street bridge when the collision occurred. The engine tore into the back of the guard’s van scattering debris over the mainline.
