Private John Arthur Steele

of 2 Dun St, Swinton, son of Mr and Mrs R Steele, has received the following certificate, issued by the Major General commanding the Guards Division:

“This is to certify that number 20464 private John Arthur Steele (Grenadier Guards) performed the following act of gallantry on the night of April 19, 1960 in the Ypres salient: Assist to bring up ammunition and bombs under fire to a scattered line of posts in the open that were put out to maintain connection. His conduct was exemplary.”

Private JA Steele, whose bravery is thus recognised in this a high quarter, is 22 years of age, and before enlistment was an engine cleaner at the Locomotive Depot Mexborough.

His elder brother, private Albert Steele, of Frederick Street, Swinton, a married man formally employed in a provision store in Rotherham, is now serving with a Labour Battalion, and has been in France about a month.

A younger brother, Simon George William Steele (Nelson Battalion, R.M.D.), aged 20, took part in the first landing on Gallipoli, and served three months before being shot through the foot, incapacitated and discharged.
