Police Court Briefs
For stealing coal valued at 2s. from Cadeby Colliery, John Thomas Elks, miner, Denaby, was fined 40s. at Doncaster on Tuesday.
For street betting at Thurnscoe, William Jackson (42), described as a bookmaker, of Thurnscoe, was fined £10 at Doncaster on Tuesday.
Pleading guilty to driving a motor-cycle without two independent brakes, George Henry Pressley, miner, Thurnscoe, was at Doncaster on Tuesday fined 20s.
For fighting on the highway, William Henry Green and James Bright, miners, of Denaby, were fined 10s. each at Doncaster on Tuesday.
Sam Sheppard, Mexborough, was fined 15s. at Doncaster on Tuesday for having no driver’s licence and for employing an unlicensed driver. John Henry White, undertaker, Mexborough, was fined 20s. for failing to obey a traffic sign and for having a driving licence four days out of date. Percy Gilbert Warren, a plasterer, of Wath, was at Doncaster on Tuesday fined 15s.
That his scarf got into his eyes and caused him to develop a speed wobble was explained to Charles Walter Turner, labourer, of Kilnhurst, who, pleading guilty at Doncaster on Tuesday to driving a motor-cycle without due care and attention, was fined 40s.
At Barnsley on Wednesday the following cyclists were fined 20s. for ignoring automatic traffic signals at Wombwell: Wilfred Powell, Doncaster; Eric Tuxford, Wath; and Ernest Speight, Mexborough.
When Cornelius Carmody, miner, of Denaby, was summoned at Doncaster on Saturday for stealing wood valued at 1s. 2d., he told the magistrates that he had gone without a meal to get to Court that morning. He was told, however, to come again next Saturday as the case was to be adjourned.
The following fine for street betting were imposed by the Rotherham West Riding magistrates on Monday: Fred Roughton (36), miner, 1 Talbot Road, Swinton, at Bridge Street, Swinton, on June 12th, £10.
Clifford R. Poole (18), engineering pupil, Wath, was fined 30s. at Rotherham on Monday for having driven a motor-cycle with insufficient brakes.
Walter Thorpe (21), Wath, was fined 20s. for driving a lorry and failing to illuminate the rear identification plate, and a further 20s. for failing to stop when required by a police officer in uniform.
John Helliwell (41), labourer, Kilnhurst, was summoned for not keeping a dangerous dog under control, and the magistrates agreed to a suggestion that an order should be made to keep the animal under proper control. Helliwell was also ordered to pay the costs.
Noah Liversidge (18), Mexborough, was fined 5s. for riding a bicycle without a light at Bridge Street, Swinton.
Jim Hickling (56), miner, Brampton Bierlow, and John Brown (51), miner, also of Brampton Bierlow, were bound over for fighting at Brampton Bierlow.
Eric Turnbull (16), Percy Norburn (18), and George Lawson (17), of Brampton Bierlow, were each fined 5s. for footballing on the highway.
Norman Burns (26), miner, Wath, was fined 15s. for keeping a dog without a licence.
