By the will of the late Mrs. Hick, of Wath, the Wath Wesleyan Circuit has benefited to the extent of £600.
A feature of this year’s vestry meetings is that larger congregations and increased offertories have been reported.
The Rector of Darfield, Rev. A. E. Sorby, is a candidate for the provostship of the new Archdeaconry of Doncaster.
A lady churchwarden has been appointed for Conisboro’ Church in the person of Mrs. G. T. Nicholson, of Rock House.
The Mexboro’ Trades Council have passed a resolution favouring the establishment of a tramway system on municipal lines.
Interest in the local elections is just beginning. Candidates are now issuing their addresses. Polling day is Saturday next, 5th April.
Two Swinton men have been rewarded by the West Riding Joint Committee for rescuing a Swinton constable from a cottage which was on fire.
Local cricket clubs are beginning to think of the approaching season. At Swinton there are great hopes that the Whitworth Cup will be won this season.
The libel action arising out of the Wath Council unpleasantness will be heard at the Spring Assizes at Leeds, which commence on Saturday, April 26th.
In connection with the Yorkshire Collieries Ambulance League, the competition for the Wood Shield will commence on Saturday, April 12th, when 109 teams will compete in the first round.
A Local Government Board inquiry will be held at Mexboro’ next Thursday, relative to the application of the Mexboro’ Urban Council to borrow money for proposed extensions to electricity works.
The financial stability of the Yorkshire Miners’ Permanent Relief Fund was the subject of a long discussion at a meeting of the Society on Wednesday. A ballot of all paying members is to be taken.
A case of deliberate suicide was enquired into at Conisboro’ on Wednesday, when it was revealed that a poor fellow had decided to end his life with a razor, but changed his mind and hanged himself instead.
The churchpeople of Great Houghton have held a bazaar this week with the object of raising money to restore the old Jacobean Chapel-of-Ease, which is one of the most interesting relics of English Church history.
Mr. Frank Jones, of Swinton, has been appointed assistant overseer and collector of the poor and district rates at Swinton at a salary of £300 per annum. The Council have decided to provide necessary clerical assistance.
The South Yorkshire Navigation Company are effecting a great improvement at their lock near Swinton Bridge by constructing four new lock gates, stripping the lock of its stonework, and carrying out other improvements.
By the death of Mr. C. L. H. Stanley, of Wath, the district has lost a keen sportsman. Mr. Stanley was at one time a splendid cricketer and golfer. At billiards he excelled, and he was a staunch supporter of the Territorial movement.
A Great Houghton pony-driver was fined 30s. at Doncaster on Saturday for cruelty to a pony in Hickleton pit. The chairman told him that if he appeared again in a cruelty case he would probably be “sent down” without the option of a fine.
Meetings have been held this week at Bolton and Goldthorpe to approve of the Bolton Council’s action in promoting a joint municipal scheme of railless cars and in opposing the Mexboro’ and Swinton Tramways Company’s Railless Traction Bill.
Denaby United F.C. suffered their record defeat of the season on Monday at Millmoor, when Rotherham County, the champions of the Midland League, beat them 10–0.
Mexboro’ Town’s team for Saturday’s home match with Hull City Reserve is: Round, Cramp and Popple; Goates, Williams and Hargreaves; Rhodes, Law, Beaumont, Hunter and Sedgewick.
Gladwin, the Town’s inside-right, is incapacitated through a twisted knee, sustained in the Good Friday match with the Rotherham County team.
