Rifling Waggons at Swinton

John Hindes, labourer, was brought up in custody on a charge of being in an enclosed yard in the occupation of the Midland Railway Company with intent to steal goods, at Swinton, on July 5th, at 11 p.m.

He was discovered in a waggon laden with various articles of food, and he had cut the cords which fastened the sheets to the waggon, but none of the articles had been interfered with.

When caught he made an excuse that a porter named Stretton was wanted by a comrade at a public-house near, but on investigation this was proved to be false. Police-constable Kendall apprehended him at Conisbro’ and he had been convicted previously at Knutsford sessions. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.
