Elsecar Fail To Save The Game

Elsecar, with a much-changed team and a weak attack, were well beaten at Swinton, though Swinton had only fifteen minutes to spare, thanks to a match-saving effort by Woolley.

The outstanding individual performance of the day was a century by Charlie Heaton, the Swinton left-hander, who batted through the Swinton innings. He and Denton gave Swinton an excellent start with 87 for the first wicket. They struck a dull period after reaching thirty, during which they flattered the bowling by over-caution. Denton was the faster scorer, making runs comfortably all-round the wicket – at one period he scored thirty while Heaton collected half a dozen but after his departure Heaton opened out. He played an excellent innings, marred by only one difficult one-handed chance in the, eighties, when he might possibly have been caught and bowled. Price forced the pace with a quickly-got 33, including two sixes and two fours off one over.

The Elsecar fielding which was keen in the first hour. slackened off considerably later. Whittaker, who was introduced into the attack, got three wickets cheaply enough, till Price spoilt his figures. Elsecar collapsed badly at the start of their reply and had five wickets down for 35 runs. Then Woolley and Harry Bamforth got together And, concentrating on defence, took the total to 75 by slow stages. After they were separated Price rang the changes on his bowlers, trying all his resources—including putting himself on—but Elsecar were threatening to save the game till Sam Cutts was given another spell. Swinton were much more effective in the field and two outstanding pieces of work were the catches taken by Reg. Williams.
