Died Of Wounds

L/Bdr. Cecil Machon (26), Royal Artillery (Field) eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Machon, 70, Piccadilly Road, Swinton, died of wounds on June 11th, while serving with the Central Mediterranean Forces.

He is the first serving solider from Piccadilly to lose his life in this war.

L/Bdr. Machon joined up in June 1939. He was an old boy of Kilnhurst National School and of Mexborough Secondary School.  He had served in India, Iraq, North Africa, Sicily and latterly in Italy.

On Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Machon received a letter from him written on June 9th asking them to look out for his photograph in the papers and on the cinema news reels.  This was followed by a letter on Monday informing Mr. and Mrs. Machon of his death.
