Mr. S. E. Baker (Swinton)
Mr. Sidney Ernest Baker, a director of the firm of Messrs. Baker and Bessemer Ltd., Kilnhurst, holds a position of considerable importance in the industrial life of the area. Mr. Baker resides at Milton House, Swinton.
Educated at Rotherham Grammar School he won an Associateship in Engineering at Wesley College and Sheffield University where he studied for three years before entering the family firm in 1909. He was appointed to the Board of Directors in 1920 and to his present post as Works Director in 1925. His other business connections include directorship of Clyde, Crane and Booth Ltd., the Leeds firm of crane manufacturers.
Mr. Baker is a member of the Iron and Steel Institute and of the management committees of the Sheffield and District Engineering Trades Employers’ Association. He serves on the Board of Referees and the Local Appeal Board. He is a director of the Sheffield Savings Bank. For a number of years he was a member of the Montagu Hospital Board of Management and still maintains an interest in its work.
Since the inception of Swinton War Welfare Fund four years ago he has served as President, he and Mrs. Baker being host and hostess at the highly successful annual garden parties held in aid of the Fund’s finances.
