Swinton Officer’s T.D.
Lieut.-Colonel Frederick William Ward, only son of Mr. S. C. Ward, J.P., and Mrs. Ward, of Swinton has been awarded the Territorial Decoration. Lt-Col. Ward was commissioned in 1926. He is a director of Ward and Sons. Ltd., Swinton, of which his father is managing director. His home is at Red Gables, Hooton Roberts.
Granted a commission in the Battalion of the 5th York and Lancaster Territorial Regiment in 1926, he served with them until the outbreak of war. He was appointed Battalion Commander when the regiment was converted to Heavy Anti-Aircraft work and commanded a Rotherham battery until February 1940, when he contracted pneumonia.
During the Battle of Britain Lt.-Col. Ward served with General Anderson as A. A. liaison officer. Undergoing a staff course in which he was successful, he subsequently received a staff appointment at H.Q. A. A. Division.
In 1942 Lt.-Col. Ward was promoted to his present rank and appointed to command H.A.A. Training Regiment. In December 1943, he was made Grade 1 Staff Officer.
He has many friends in the neighbourhood who will be glad to hear of the Territorial Decoration awarded him for long and meritorious service with the Territorial Army.
