‘You Have a fine Son”  

The father of a 14-years-old boy -11- was complimented by the Chairman (Mr. W Cloke) at Rotherham West Riding Court on Monday for having such a fine son.”

Mr. Cloke presented the Royal Humane Society’s Parchment Testimonial for saving life to the boy, George Peter Round (14), of 89, Frederick street, Mexborough.

The citation stated:

“During the afternoon of Tuesday, July 24th, 1951, George Peter Round was fishing from the banks of the Dearne and Dove Canal at Bowbroom Locks, Swinton, when he saw that Raymond Frost (7), of 30, Valley Road, Swinton, who had been playing with another boy, on the opposite bank, had fallen Into the canal and was in difficulties some 12 feet from the side.

“George immediately ran across the lock gates to the other bank, and with complete disregard for his own safety jumped fully clothed into the water which is 20-25 feet deep, and succeeded in bringing the boy to the shallow water at the lock side. Assistance was then given by a bystander, after which he rescued the boy was taken to a nearby house and later to hospital.”
