Estate Damage.
Seven youths were each summoned at Rotherham for two offences, first with having thrown missiles on the highway and second with having done wilful damage to trees and fences on the Wentworth estate.
The defendants included Tom Lupton (17), pony driver, Swinton; Bernard Hankin (18), haulage hand, Swinton; Joseph Madden (19), haulage hand, Swinton; Dan Elliott (18), haulage hand, Swinton; and three others each under 17 years.
Mr. A. S. Furniss, solicitor, of Gichard and Co., appeared for the prosecution in the damage case.
The evidence showed that the defendants were seen in Golden Smithies Wood in the forenoon of Sunday. July 19th, taking crab apples from trees, which they afterwards threw at people passing along the highway.
Damage done to grass, trees, and fences was estimated by Mr. Wm. Willett, who gave evidence, at £4.
For throwing missiles the defendants were each fined 10s. and 3s. costs. For the damage three were fined 20s. each, and four 30s each.
